Door chain.

This is a simple device preventing the door from opening beyond a few inches.
It allows the occupier to take a peek at the visitor without allowing access to the home.

Wall mirror

A small mirror attached to the wall next to the door opening gives the occupier a full view of the area in front of the house whilst the door chain is in place.
Here the visitor can be inspected before the occupier decides to open the door or not.

Door scope

A door scope is a small lens fitted through the door giving the resident the opportunity to see outside the door without opeing it.

Door announcer.

This is a device fitted to the wall on the approach to the door.
As someone passes it, an automated or personalised message will be audible reminding the occupier to fit the chain and check for identification before allowing anyone in.

These are available from many outlets and vary in price and sophistication.
