Postal Delivery Scam

Leicestershire Constabulary is warning members of the public about a postal scam which operating nationally.
Cards are being posted through letterboxes from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service). The cards suggest that the company was unable to deliver a parcel to your address and urge you to contact them on 0906 6611911, which is a premium rate number.
DO NOT call this number. If you dial the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call. This postal scam is currently under investigation by ICSTIS (the premium rate service regulator).
People who receive a card with these details are urged to contact either Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 239 6655,
ICSTIS at www.icstis.org.uk, or your local trading standards office.

Use your chain !!

When answering your front door ensure that you use a door chain if fitted. There has been yet another distraction burglary in the Loughborough area this week. It is almost a weekly occurance somewhere in the area and usually takes the form of either two or three men pushing their way in, or claiming to be from the gas, electric, water etc.

If in doubt always ask for identification and if still not sure, ring the number on the identity card. A genuine caller will not mind waiting while you check.

Lottery Scam

Police are warning the public to be aware following reports of a scam currently operating in the county.

Police have received a complaint from a couple who were sent two copies of a letter from the International Lotto Commission, stating they had won €615,810 (£418,019.41). The letter included a Spanish telephone number which the recipient had to contact to claim the prize.

On telephoning the number the ‘winner’ was asked to fax through copies of his passport and driving licence.

The recipients contacted the organisation on a number of occasions after they received a letter asking for payment but they got no answer, but found when they withheld their telephone number the call was answered and the procedure started again.

DS John Wardle, of the Economic Crime Unit, said: “We would like the public to be aware of these letters and if they receive them to throw them away. As far as we are aware the International Lotto Commission is not a genuine organisation. The envelopes have a Spanish stamp on them. It is important people do not respond to these types of letters.

“Our experience is that the whole purpose of these letters is to deceive members of the public into parting with payments; for example, legal fees in the expectation of getting the lottery money. We would suggest that if something is to good to be true, it won’t be true.”

Yet more scams

We have been informed about two scams of which you should all be aware.

1)Lone females should beware if a man approaches them in a car park claiming to be a fireman who has to get to his fire station urgently but his car has broken down, he has lost his keys etc. He asks to borrow money for taxi fare and gives the name and address of the fire station. Of course neither he nor his money are ever seen again. 50 such incidents have been reported over 10 police areas and the police are convinced it is the same man. He is white, in his mid 30s, between 5' 6" and 5' 8" tall, of muscular build and always in smart casual dress. If anyone is approached they should contact DC Kevin Harper 01773 572120.

2) A man, purporting to be employed by NHW, is approaching residents asking to check their security lights etc. He then produces a camera which plugs into the back of a TV set for which he charges £300 - apparently it is worth about £20 ! If you are contacted please contact 0116 2222 222.

Malicious Telephone Calls

It is a sad fact that some people enjoy telephoning people just to be offensive, indecent, menacing, or simply
to make a -nuisance of themselves-but you don't have to put up with them.

The central piece of advice for any recipient of a malicious or obscene phone call is to remember that you are
in control. If an individual makes a call for any of these reasons it can be an offence under the Telecommunications
Act , and callers can be jailed for up to six months.
Follow this advice from BT:
* Keep calm-most malicious callers get pleasure from an emotional response.Stay calm, emotionless and detached.
* Don't give out your number or any other personal information unless you know the caller. This will stop a caller
who has dialled your number at random from remembering it and calling you again.
* Don't give your name and number in an answer machine message, or say that you are out, on holiday, or away.
* If you can, get a male to record the message as this may deter nuisance callers.
* If a caller asks, "What number is this", ask what number they want and tell them whether they are right or wrong.
* Never answer any questions on the phone, no matter how innocent they may seem, unless you know the caller.
* If you are female, avoid giving details of your gender or marital status in your phone book entry-just use your initials
instead of your first name
* If you receive persistent malicious calls and would like advice, call BT on Free one 0800 666 700. A 24-hour
recorded message will tell you how to deal with the situation an what to do if you need more help.
* If you subscribe to NTL or Telewest and you receive malicious calls , contact your customer services number for
advice.
