Pub scheme warns would-be hooligans it will keep a ....WATCHFUL EYE

Police and licencees are warning thugs to stay away from Loughborough town centre during the forthcoming Euro 2004 football tournament.

Members of the Loughborough Eye pub watch, many of who will be screening matches live from their bars, are making preparations to try to ensure the town centre remains safe and crime free during the international soccer festival.
Pubs and clubs warned they would deal quickly and firmly with troublemakers.
Licensees will be liaising with Police and CCTV operators throughout the tournament. Hand held radios will be tested by Loughborough Eye one week before kick-off, extra staff will be draughted in to cope with the crowds and no-one deemed over the the limit will be served alcohol.
Licensees and the public have been asked by the Police to listen to the chatter in their pubs and forward any information which may be of use in fighting crime.
A national survey of 3,000 fans has shown that for the first time, more than half of England football fans are planning to watch Euro 2004 matches at their local pub, rather than in their living rooms.

Loughborough Eye chairman Alex Nesbitt said "We have a very strong pubwatch. We have about 30 members who all look out for each other. The whole town is covered, so trouble makers need not bother coming to Loughborough".
"Our radio links have worked brilliantly in the past and we are confident they will help prevent dis-order in the town next month.

Behaviour

"We want our customers to come to our pubs and clubs and enjoy themselves, but in a responsible manner."
Loughborough Police sergeant Margaret McLoughlin said "Obviously we hope our national team will do well and that people modify their behaviour to ensure everyone's safety"
