» Leicestershire North NHWAWarning Zone - Volunteering opportunityEnjoy working with children? Warning Zone, a children’s safety education centre based in Syston is recruiting volunteers to act as guides for school parties from the City, County and Rutland that will be visiting the centre from this autumn when it opens for business. By experiencing eight inter-active scenarios during their two hour visit, the 10 year olds will be learning how to stay safe in their everyday environment. Additionally, because they will have just attained the age of criminal responsibility, they will also be finding out what this means and how their actions have consequences not only for themselves, but for other people. The centre, set up by the High Sheriffs’ charity “Leicestershire & Rutland Crimebeat” and supported by the police, fire service, education departments and other statutory bodies, will be covering subjects ranging from road safety to criminal damage. Alan Godber, Centre Co-ordinator, says that volunteering at Warning Zone will appeal to a wide range of people: “You do not have to be a teacher. If you enjoy working with children and are interested in their welfare, being a Warning Zone guide will be extremely rewarding. Whether you are retired, a shift worker, a student or anyone with some time to offer during term time, this is an opportunity to be involved in a unique project in the East Midlands.” Volunteers will be working as part of a team so this opportunity is ideal for friends wanting to do something together; in fact the whole project fits in with the wider aims of Neighbourhood Watch. Full training and ongoing support is provided by the three employed staff and out-of-pocket travel expenses are reimbursed.
